Engineering Freedom

The abaldabroad mission is to build a life of freedom and utilize that freedom to live a life of Adventure, Growth, and Connection.

This is a metaphorical framework I came up with for how I am building freedom in my own life.

My 3 Values

For me, Adventure, Growth, and Connection are the three main values I find purpose, enjoyment, and fulfillment in. If I had unlimited freedom, I would spend my time adventuring & having experiences, learning & growing, and connecting with others.

These are the 3 values I care about & focus on, but feel free to choose your own.

The Freedom Bridge

Here's how it works:

Gaining enough freedom in your life is necessary to achieving the life you want, akin to how a bridge connects where you are to the island where you want to be.

There are 3 types of freedom:

  1. Time Freedom: The freedom to spend your time how you want

  2. Location Freedom: The freedom to be where you want to be

  3. Social Freedom: The freedom to be around the people you want to be around

All three freedom types are necessary at some level:

  • You can have a fully free schedule (Time) and the ability to go wherever you want (Location), but be stuck with people you despise (Social).

  • You can have all the time in the world (Time) with your best friends (Social), but all be trapped in a jail cell (Location).

  • You can have the ability to go wherever you want (Location) with your favorite people (Social), but have no time to enjoy any of it (Time).

All three of these scenarios are obviously extreme, but the point stands— All are important.

How do you attain this freedom?

There are 3 areas that need to be maintained to support the 3 types of freedom.

  1. Physical Health

  2. Financial Health

  3. Mental Health

I call these the Health Pillars.

These may be somewhat self-explanatory, but let me drive the idea home by explaining how these pillars contribute to our freedom (and how by neglecting any one of them causes the bridge— and our freedom— to crumble).

Physical Health is what our bodies can do and how well they function.

  • Improves longevity, increasing usable time.

  • Provides the ability to move around the world, whether it be walking through an airport or climbing a mountain

  • Prevents illness that can be spread to other people

Financial Health is, love it or hate it, our access to resources that operate our world.

  • Allows you to buy back your time, and can allow you to not have to trade your time for money

  • Creates the resources needed to live where you want (rent, living costs, plane tickets, etc.)

  • Can buy you access to certain groups, communities, and people

Mental Health is the lens you view the rest of your life through.

You could have everything else I mentioned and still live in suffering.

  • What good is free time if you’re depressed?

  • What good is being rich if you still feel lack?

  • What good is the ability to go anywhere if you never like where you are?

  • What good are the coolest friends if you still feel lonely?
